Risk Assessment

The risk assessment team at ARCADIS Geraghty and Miller International Ltd. are recognised as leaders within the field, and are highly experienced in undertaking a variety of forms of qualitative and quantitative risk assessment in line with the UK methodology for assessing contaminated land.

We adopt an integrated approach to risk assessment, through considering risks to human health, water resources and ecological receptors.  Our in-house Generic Assessment Criteria have been developed for a wide range of contaminants, where UK Soil Guideline Values have not yet been developed, and consider potential risks to both on-site and off-site receptors.  Where a generic quantitative risk assessment indicates that unacceptable risk may be present, ARCADIS GMI is able to undertake detailed quantitative (site-specific) risk assessments which are robust, defensible and often include innovative risk-based solutions.

The type of sites we assess range from small scale retail sites, through to larger scale industrial & chemical works and housing developments.  Quantitative risk assessment is seen as integral within ARCADIS GMI, with desk studies, site investigations and remediation undertaken following a risk-based approach.

ARCADIS GMI is widely experienced in understanding appropriate methodologies for the risk assessment of contaminated land in individual countries, and for individual sites.  In addition to our strong understanding of risk based solutions in individual countries we have also been involved in international studies.

An example of one such study is the Risk Assessment Comparison Study, which ARCADIS GMI was commissioned to carry out by NICOLE - the Network for Industrially Contaminated Land in Europe. This pan-European study identified different risk assessment systems in use in all the major countries. Similarities and differences were identified from a policy and legislative level through to a detailed understanding of software tools used in the risk assessment process.

As a result of our commission for this important strategic study, ARCADIS GMI is ideally qualified to advise clients on the most practical and cost-effective risk based approaches for problem sites across Europe.
