An environmental audit is a systematic, objective evaluation of environmental performance. The aim of an environmental audit and the scope and depth of work conducted, can vary widely. An audit may seek to confirm legal compliance, or it may be used as a proactive tool to identify areas for risk reduction, performance improvement and cost reduction.

ARCADIS GMI provides audit services in the following areas:

Environmental Aspect Identification and Significance Determination
An environmental review of an organisation’s or facility’s activities environmental effects and legal requirements, to establish its significant environmental aspects. Includes the determination of significance criteria if required.
Internal Audits

Internal environmental audits of an organisation’s / facility’s Environmental Management System (EMS), in support of a client’s internal audit team. We are also able to provide audit training for in-house personnel.
Pre-certification Audit or "Gap Analysis"

Reviews compliance with the requirements of ISO 14001, prior to an external certification audit. Identifies and makes recommendations for the correction of:

  • any "major" non-compliances against ISO 14001, which would prevent a successful certification audit, including principal areas of regulatory non-compliance.

  • Principal "minor" non-compliances which could, in sufficient numbers in the same element of the EMS or in the same area of an organisation, prevent a successful certification audit.

Compliance Assurance
Establishes the legal requirements applicable to an organisation or facility and the extent to which it is complying with them. May also include the evaluation of compliance with other environmental requirements, such as corporate policy and customer specifications. Subsequent work can be undertaken to correct any non-compliances identified.
Pre-Aquisition Audit
An assessment of the environmental liabilities (past, present and future) of an organisation or facility prior to merger or acquisition. The scope and depth of pre-acquisition audits can vary significantly. Typical topics include: legal compliance, land and groundwater contamination, and future liabilities
Environmental Risk Assessment
A review of physical environmental risks and (usually) the operational controls used to manage them, to identify areas for improvement. Subsequent work can be undertaken to reduce or eliminate risks through engineering works or changes in operational control
